How Long Does Coffee Last?

Brewed black coffee lasts 3–4 days in the fridge, though it tastes best within hours. Coffee with milk or creamer should be refrigerated within 2 hours. Opened ground coffee stays fresh 3–5 months in the pantry, and whole beans taste best within 1–3 weeks of opening.

Coffee is both a dry pantry product, as roasted beans or grounds, and a brewed drink. Dry coffee is too low in moisture to spoil; it simply goes stale as its aromatic oils oxidize, faster once ground. Brewed black coffee is mildly acidic and low in nutrients, but it turns bitter within hours, and added milk makes it perishable.

How to store coffee

How to tell if coffee has gone bad

  • Mold on brewed coffee or in a carafe or reservoir that was left sitting for days.
  • A sour, rancid or musty smell from brewed coffee, or curdled milk in it.
  • Grounds or beans that are damp, clumped or visibly moldy have gotten wet and should be discarded.
  • A flat, cardboard-like aroma from dry coffee means it is stale, which affects flavor only.

Bacteria that cause food poisoning usually do not change the look, smell or taste of food. Go by the time limits first, and the signs above second.

Frequently asked questions

Can you drink day-old coffee?

Black coffee that has sat out for up to about 12 hours is unlikely to harm you, but it will taste bitter and stale, and we would not keep it longer than that. Refrigerated in a sealed jar it keeps 3–4 days. Coffee containing milk, cream or creamer is different and should be discarded after 2 hours at room temperature.

Do coffee beans expire?

Not in a safety sense, as long as they stay dry. The date on the bag is about flavor. Whole beans are at their best for roughly 1–3 weeks after opening and unopened bags for a few months; after that they are safe but increasingly flat. Moldy or damp beans are the only ones to throw out.

Should coffee be stored in the freezer?

Only for long-term storage of coffee you will not use within a few weeks. Freeze it in small, truly airtight portions and thaw each one only once, still sealed, so condensation does not form on the beans. For daily coffee, a sealed canister in the cupboard works better than either the fridge or the freezer.

How long does cold brew last in the fridge?

Homemade cold brew concentrate keeps 7–10 days in a sealed jar in the fridge, with the best flavor in the first week. Once you dilute it with water or add milk, drink it within 2–3 days. Store-bought cold brew should be used by its date and within about a week of opening.
