How Long Does Flaxseed Last?
Whole flaxseed keeps about 6 months in the pantry and 1 year in the fridge. Ground flaxseed lasts only about 1 month in the pantry after opening, 3–6 months in the fridge, or up to 1 year frozen.

shelf life- Ground: 3–6 months in the fridge

Fridge at 40°F (4°C) or below · freezer at 0°F (−18°C). Freezer times are for best quality; frozen food stays safe longer.
Flaxseed is a small brown or golden seed whose oil is more than half alpha-linolenic acid, a fragile omega-3 fat that oxidizes very easily. The hard, glossy hull protects whole seeds for months, but grinding breaks that barrier, so ground flaxseed and flax meal turn rancid within weeks at room temperature unless kept cold.
How to store flaxseed
- Buy whole flaxseed and grind a week or two's worth at a time in a coffee or spice grinder. It is the single most effective way to keep flax fresh.
- Store opened ground flaxseed in the fridge or freezer in an opaque, airtight container; light speeds up oxidation along with heat and air.
- Use ground flax straight from the freezer. It stays loose and free-flowing, so there is no need to thaw it for smoothies, oatmeal or baking.
- Press the air out of the bag before resealing, or transfer the meal to a jar just large enough to hold it, to limit contact with oxygen.
How to tell if flaxseed has gone bad
- A smell like fish, oil paint or linseed-oil varnish. Fresh flax smells mild, clean and faintly nutty.
- A sharp, bitter, burning or sour aftertaste; fresh flaxseed tastes mildly nutty and slightly sweet.
- Ground flax that has clumped from moisture or has visible mold.
- Webbing, larvae or small beetles in whole seeds stored for a long time in the pantry.
Bacteria that cause food poisoning usually do not change the look, smell or taste of food. Go by the time limits first, and the signs above second.

Frequently asked questions
Does ground flaxseed need to be refrigerated?
Yes, once opened. Ground flaxseed keeps about 1 month in the pantry but 3–6 months in the fridge and up to a year in the freezer. Grinding exposes the omega-3 oil to air, and cold is what slows it from turning rancid. Whole seeds are fine in a cool cupboard.
How do I know if flaxseed is rancid?
Rancid flaxseed smells fishy or like oil paint and tastes bitter or sharp. Flaxseed oil is the same substance as linseed oil used in paints, which is why the smell is so distinctive. Discard it; rancid flax will flavor anything you bake with it, and the omega-3 fats you bought it for have degraded.
Is whole or ground flaxseed better for long storage?
Whole flaxseed stores much longer: about 6 months in the pantry and a year or more refrigerated, versus weeks for ground. The intact hull keeps oxygen away from the oil. Since whole seeds tend to pass through the body undigested, the usual approach is to store them whole and grind small amounts as needed.
Can I use flaxseed after the best-by date?
Often yes, especially whole seeds or ground flax kept in the freezer. The date indicates peak quality rather than safety. Smell and taste a pinch first. If it is mild and nutty, use it; if it is fishy, bitter or paint-like, it has oxidized and should be thrown away.
