How Long Do Frozen Waffles Last?
Frozen waffles keep their best quality for 3–4 months unopened in the freezer and 1–2 months once opened. If thawed, keep them in the fridge and eat within 1–2 days.
Frozen Waffles — unopened
shelf life- Opened: 1–2 days in the fridge
- Homemade: 1–2 days in the fridge
Fridge at 40°F (4°C) or below · freezer at 0°F (−18°C). Freezer times are for best quality; frozen food stays safe longer.
Frozen waffles are fully baked waffles made from flour, eggs, milk and oil, frozen so they can be reheated in a toaster. Because they are already cooked and fairly dry, they are low-risk while frozen. Their open grid has a large surface area, though, so they lose moisture and absorb freezer odors quickly once the inner bag is opened, and they mold like bread if kept thawed.
How to store frozen waffles
- Toast waffles directly from the freezer; thawing first makes them soggy and they will not crisp properly.
- The cardboard box offers little protection once the inner bag is torn open. Twist the bag closed and clip it, or move the waffles to a zip-top freezer bag.
- To freeze homemade waffles, cool them completely on a rack, freeze them in a single layer on a tray, then stack them in a freezer bag with parchment between.
- Slightly underbake homemade waffles meant for freezing, so they finish browning in the toaster instead of drying out.
- Keep the box away from strongly scented freezer items such as fish or chopped onions, because waffles absorb odors readily.
How to tell if frozen waffles have gone bad
- Frost in the grid pockets and dry, white, brittle edges from freezer burn.
- Waffles frozen together in a bent or flattened stack, which shows the box thawed and refroze.
- A stale, cardboard-like or 'freezer' taste after toasting.
- Green, white or black mold spots on waffles that were kept thawed in the fridge or on the counter.
Bacteria that cause food poisoning usually do not change the look, smell or taste of food. Go by the time limits first, and the signs above second.

| State | Fridge | Freezer | Pantry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unopened | 1–2 days | 3–4 months | Not safe |

| Opened | 1–2 days | 1–2 months | Not safe |

Not safe = perishable: no more than 2 hours at room temperature (1 hour above 90°F / 32°C). Not recommended = possible, but quality suffers or it serves no purpose.
Frequently asked questions
Do frozen waffles expire?
Frozen waffles stay safe indefinitely at 0°F (−18°C), but quality is best within about 3–4 months unopened and 1–2 months after opening. The best-by date on the box is a quality date. Older waffles are edible but dry, crumbly and prone to tasting like the rest of the freezer.
Can you eat frozen waffles that thawed?
Yes, if they thawed in the refrigerator or were out for less than 2 hours. They are fully baked, so they are lower risk than raw frozen foods, but they contain egg and milk and will mold. Eat them within 1–2 days or refreeze them promptly, accepting a drier, tougher texture.
Is it safe to eat frozen waffles without toasting them?
They are fully cooked, so an untoasted waffle is not raw, but manufacturers label them to be heated before eating and that is the safer practice. Frozen ready-to-heat foods have occasionally been recalled for Listeria, which heating destroys. Toasting also greatly improves the texture.
How do you freeze homemade waffles?
Cool them fully, freeze them flat on a baking sheet for about an hour, then transfer them to a freezer bag with the air pressed out. They keep their best quality for 1–2 months. Reheat from frozen in a toaster or a 350°F (175°C) oven for about 10 minutes.
Why do my frozen waffles have ice crystals on them?
Ice crystals form when moisture leaves the waffle and refreezes on the surface, usually because the bag was left open or the freezer temperature fluctuates. A light frost can be brushed off. Heavy frost with dry, pale edges is freezer burn; the waffles are safe but will toast up tough.
