How Long Does Frozen Fruit Last?
Frozen fruit keeps its best quality for 8–12 months in the freezer. Once thawed in the fridge, use it within 1–2 days.
Frozen Fruit — unopened
shelf life- Opened: 1–2 days in the fridge
- Homemade: 1–2 days in the fridge
Fridge at 40°F (4°C) or below · freezer at 0°F (−18°C). Freezer times are for best quality; frozen food stays safe longer.
Frozen fruit is washed, sometimes sliced, and quick-frozen raw, usually without blanching and often without added sugar. Freezing ruptures the cell walls, so thawed fruit is soft and releases a lot of juice, which is why it suits smoothies, baking and sauces better than eating as is. Natural acidity protects it somewhat, but thawed fruit is still cut fruit and is perishable.
How to store frozen fruit
- For smoothies, use the fruit straight from the freezer; it chills and thickens the drink, so you need less ice.
- Thaw fruit for eating in a covered bowl in the fridge, and serve it while a few ice crystals remain so it holds its shape.
- To freeze your own, spread washed, dried berries or sliced fruit on a parchment-lined tray, freeze until hard, then bag them so the pieces stay separate.
- Reseal opened bags with the air pressed out, or transfer the fruit to a freezer bag; the thin zip on many retail bags often fails.
- Freeze overripe bananas peeled and in chunks; whole bananas in their skin are difficult to peel once frozen.
How to tell if frozen fruit has gone bad
- Fruit fused into a solid block with frozen juice pooled at the bottom of the bag, showing it thawed and refroze.
- A thick coating of frost and dry, pale, shrunken pieces from freezer burn.
- A fermented, wine-like or sour smell after thawing.
- Visible mold on thawed fruit, or a slimy feel beyond the normal softness of thawed berries.
Bacteria that cause food poisoning usually do not change the look, smell or taste of food. Go by the time limits first, and the signs above second.

| State | Fridge | Freezer | Pantry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unopened | 1–2 days | 8–12 months | Not safe |
| Fridge time is after thawing. Safe beyond 12 months at 0°F (−18°C), with declining quality. | |||
| Opened | 1–2 days | 6–8 months | Not safe |
| Press out the air and reseal; opened bags frost over faster. | |||
| Homemade | 1–2 days | 8–12 months | Not safe |
| Fruit you froze yourself; citrus is best within 4–6 months. | |||
Not safe = perishable: no more than 2 hours at room temperature (1 hour above 90°F / 32°C). Not recommended = possible, but quality suffers or it serves no purpose.
Frequently asked questions
How long does frozen fruit last in the freezer?
Frozen fruit keeps its best quality for 8–12 months at 0°F (−18°C) and remains safe to eat after that as long as it never thawed. Over time it dries out, collects frost and loses flavor and color. Opened bags are best used within about 6–8 months.
How long does thawed frozen fruit last in the fridge?
Thawed frozen fruit lasts 1–2 days in the fridge. It breaks down faster than fresh fruit because freezing has already damaged its cell structure and released sugary juice. Thaw only what you need, keep it covered, and do not leave it on the counter for more than 2 hours.
Do I need to wash or cook frozen berries?
Commercial frozen fruit is washed before freezing and is sold as ready to eat in the US, so washing at home is not needed. Frozen berries have occasionally been recalled for hepatitis A or norovirus. People at higher risk who want extra protection can briefly boil berries before use, which inactivates those viruses.
Can you refreeze thawed fruit?
Yes, fruit that thawed in the refrigerator can be refrozen safely, and the USDA notes that refrozen fruit mainly suffers in texture and flavor. It will be mushier, so use it for baking, jam, sauces or smoothies. Discard fruit that smells fermented or sat at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
Why is my frozen fruit covered in ice crystals?
Ice crystals form when moisture leaves the fruit and refreezes on its surface, which happens with air in the bag or when the freezer temperature fluctuates. A light frost is harmless. Heavy frost with shriveled fruit is freezer burn: safe, but bland and best reserved for cooked recipes or smoothies.
