How Long Does Lemonade Last?
Homemade lemonade lasts 5–7 days in the fridge and 3–4 months in the freezer. Opened store-bought lemonade keeps 7–10 days refrigerated. Do not leave it out for more than 2 hours.
Lemonade — homemade
shelf life- Opened: 7–10 days in the fridge
- Unopened, shelf-stable: 9–12 months in the fridge
Fridge at 40°F (4°C) or below · freezer at 0°F (−18°C). Freezer times are for best quality; frozen food stays safe longer.
Lemonade is lemon juice diluted with water and sweetened with sugar. It is very acidic, which keeps most dangerous bacteria from growing, but homemade lemonade is unpasteurized and full of sugar, so yeasts and molds still take hold within a week or so. Its fresh, bright flavor fades faster than it spoils.
How to store lemonade
- Store homemade lemonade in a covered glass pitcher or jar; acid can pick up a metallic taste from aluminum or unlined metal containers.
- Strain out lemon slices and pulp before refrigerating. Rinds left soaking release bitter oils and pith flavor within a day.
- Make a concentrate of lemon juice and sugar syrup, which keeps its flavor longer, and dilute it by the glass.
- Freeze lemonade or concentrate in ice cube trays, then use the cubes to chill a pitcher without watering it down.
How to tell if lemonade has gone bad
- Bubbles, fizz or a yeasty, beer-like smell from fermentation.
- A cloudy film, slimy strands or fuzzy mold on the surface or on floating lemon slices.
- A bottle that has swelled or hisses when opened.
- A flat, bitter or cardboard taste means it is stale; settled pulp at the bottom is normal.
Bacteria that cause food poisoning usually do not change the look, smell or taste of food. Go by the time limits first, and the signs above second.

Frequently asked questions
How long can lemonade sit out at a party or lemonade stand?
Keep it to 2 hours, or 1 hour when it is above 90°F (32°C) outside. Lemonade's acidity makes it lower-risk than dairy or meat, but it is unpasteurized and handled by many hands at a party. Serve it from a dispenser set in ice, or refill a small pitcher from one kept in the fridge.
Does homemade lemonade go bad?
Yes, within about 5–7 days in the fridge. It has no preservatives and has not been pasteurized, so natural yeasts eventually ferment the sugar and molds can grow on the surface. It also simply tastes worse with time, turning bitter and flat after the first few days.
Can you freeze lemonade?
Yes, lemonade freezes well for 3–4 months. Leave headspace in the container for expansion and stir it after thawing, since the sugar-rich portion thaws first. Partly thawed lemonade also makes an instant slush. Avoid freezing it in glass bottles filled to the top.
How long does lemonade made from powder or concentrate last?
Once mixed with water, treat it like any opened lemonade and use it within 7–10 days, kept refrigerated. Dry powdered mix keeps in the pantry until its date as long as it stays dry, and frozen concentrate holds its quality for about a year in the freezer.
