How Long Do Muffins Last?
Muffins last 1–2 days at room temperature, up to 1 week in the fridge and 2–3 months in the freezer. Muffins with cheese, meat or cream cheese filling need to be refrigerated from the start.
Muffins — fresh
shelf life- Fresh, savory or filled: 3–4 days in the fridge
- Store-bought: 1–2 weeks in the fridge
Fridge at 40°F (4°C) or below · freezer at 0°F (−18°C). Freezer times are for best quality; frozen food stays safe longer.
Muffins are individually baked quick breads leavened with baking powder or soda rather than yeast. They are moister than bread or cookies, and often studded with fresh fruit, which is why they mold faster than most baked goods. In a sealed container their own moisture migrates to the surface and turns the tops sticky.
How to store muffins
- Line an airtight container with a paper towel, add the muffins in one layer and lay another towel on top. The paper absorbs the moisture that makes muffin tops wet and sticky.
- Cool muffins completely on a rack before storing; bagging them warm is the fastest route to mold.
- Freeze muffins individually wrapped or in a freezer bag, and reheat one from frozen for 30–45 seconds in the microwave or 10 minutes in a 350°F (175°C) oven.
- Skip the fridge for muffins you will eat within 2 days; it stales the crumb faster than the counter does.
How to tell if muffins have gone bad
- Blue-green or white fuzzy mold, typically starting around berries or on the damp underside.
- A sour, yeasty or alcoholic smell from fermenting fruit.
- Tops that are wet and tacky are a quality problem, but they are also the conditions in which mold arrives next.
- A dry, crumbly muffin that tastes of nothing is stale, not harmful.
Bacteria that cause food poisoning usually do not change the look, smell or taste of food. Go by the time limits first, and the signs above second.

| State | Fridge | Freezer | Pantry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh | 1 week | 2–3 months | 1–2 days |
| Homemade or bakery. Fresh-fruit muffins mold soonest; refrigerate or freeze after day 2. | |||
| Fresh, savory or filled | 3–4 days | 2–3 months | Not safe |
| Egg, cheese, bacon or sausage muffins and cream cheese filled muffins. | |||

Not safe = perishable: no more than 2 hours at room temperature (1 hour above 90°F / 32°C). Not recommended = possible, but quality suffers or it serves no purpose.
Frequently asked questions
Should muffins be refrigerated?
Not for the first day or two. Sweet muffins keep best at room temperature for 1–2 days, because the fridge speeds up staling. After that, refrigerate them for up to a week or, better, freeze them. Savory muffins made with cheese, egg or meat, and any with cream cheese filling, should go in the fridge right away.
Why do my muffins get sticky on top?
Moisture from the inside of the muffin moves outward and gets trapped under the lid, dissolving the sugar on the crust. It is a texture issue rather than spoilage. Storing the muffins between layers of paper towel, and cooling them completely first, keeps the tops dry.
Can I cut the mold off a muffin and eat the rest?
No. Muffins are soft and porous, so mold threads spread well beyond the spot you can see, and the USDA advises discarding soft baked goods with any mold. If one muffin in a container is moldy, check the others carefully; those touching it should go too.
How do you freeze and reheat muffins?
Freeze fully cooled muffins in a freezer bag with the air pressed out, where they keep their quality for 2–3 months. Thaw them on the counter for about an hour, or microwave one from frozen for 30–45 seconds. A few minutes in a hot oven afterwards restores a crisp top.
