How Long Do Blueberries Last?
Fresh blueberries last 1–2 weeks in the fridge and about 1 day at room temperature. In the freezer they keep best quality for 8–12 months. Wash them only right before eating.
Blueberries — fresh
shelf life- Thawed: 2–3 days in the fridge
Fridge at 40°F (4°C) or below · freezer at 0°F (−18°C). Freezer times are for best quality; frozen food stays safe longer.
Blueberries are the hardiest of the common berries. Their firm skin and the natural waxy coating called bloom, the silvery dust on the surface, slow down moisture loss and mold. They do not ripen further after picking, and like all berries they spoil quickly once they get wet or crushed.
How to store blueberries
- Keep blueberries dry and unwashed in their vented clamshell; the silvery bloom on the skin is a natural protective layer, not dirt or pesticide residue.
- Pick through the container when you get home and remove any split, leaking or moldy berries before they spoil their neighbors.
- Freeze them unwashed and dry, straight on a tray, then bag them and rinse briefly just before use; washing first toughens the skins in the freezer.
- Store the container on a fridge shelf rather than in a sealed humid drawer, since trapped moisture encourages mold.
How to tell if blueberries have gone bad
- White or gray fuzzy mold, often hidden at the bottom of the clamshell or around the stem scar.
- Berries that are wrinkled and shrunken, or soft and leaking purple juice into the container.
- A sour, fermented or vinegar-like smell.
- Berries stuck together in a wet clump.
Bacteria that cause food poisoning usually do not change the look, smell or taste of food. Go by the time limits first, and the signs above second.

Frequently asked questions
Is the white coating on blueberries mold?
Usually not. A thin, even, silvery-white film that does not wipe off in tufts is bloom, a natural wax the berry makes to protect itself, and it is a sign of freshness. Mold looks different: fuzzy, raised and patchy, usually on soft or split berries.
How long do blueberries last in the fridge?
Blueberries last 1–2 weeks in the fridge when they are stored dry and unwashed. Berries bought at peak freshness from a farm stand tend toward the longer end, while supermarket berries that have already traveled for days may only manage a week.
Do you need to wash blueberries before freezing them?
It is better not to. Freeze them dry and unwashed, then rinse them when you take out what you need. Washing beforehand leaves water on the skin that freezes into ice, makes the berries clump and can toughen the skins. Commercially frozen blueberries are already washed.
Can you eat blueberries that are wrinkled or soft?
Wrinkled but dry blueberries have only lost moisture and are fine for muffins, pancakes or smoothies. Berries that are mushy, leaking, moldy or smell fermented should be thrown out, along with any berries stuck to them.
