How Long Do Plums Last?
Ripe plums last 3–5 days in the fridge and 1–2 days on the counter. Firm plums need 2–3 days at room temperature to ripen. Pitted and frozen, plums keep best quality for 8–12 months.

shelf life- Unripe: 2–3 days in the pantry

Fridge at 40°F (4°C) or below · freezer at 0°F (−18°C). Freezer times are for best quality; frozen food stays safe longer.
Plums are stone fruit with smooth, tart skin and a natural dusty bloom that helps them hold moisture. Most are sold firm and finish softening at room temperature. Their tighter skin makes them slightly more durable than peaches, but once ripe they turn soft and start to ferment within days.
How to store plums
- Ripen firm plums in a paper bag or fruit bowl at room temperature until they give slightly at the tip opposite the stem.
- Do not wipe off the powdery bloom before storing; it is the plum's own protective coating and a sign the fruit has not been overhandled.
- Refrigerate ripe plums in an open bag or bowl in the crisper and let them warm up for half an hour before eating for better flavor.
- For freezing, halve and pit the plums, freeze the halves cut side up on a tray, then bag them for baking, compote or jam.
How to tell if plums have gone bad
- Very soft fruit with wrinkled, loose skin or wet, split areas.
- Brown flesh near the pit together with a sour, wine-like smell.
- Mold at the stem end or on any break in the skin.
- Sticky juice seeping onto the shelf or bag.
Bacteria that cause food poisoning usually do not change the look, smell or taste of food. Go by the time limits first, and the signs above second.

Frequently asked questions
How do you know when a plum is ripe?
A ripe plum gives gently when pressed near the tip opposite the stem, feels heavy for its size and smells fruity at the stem end. Color is unreliable because varieties range from yellow to nearly black. Rock-hard plums need another 2–3 days on the counter.
Do plums need to be refrigerated?
Only after they are ripe. Ripe plums keep 3–5 days in the fridge compared with 1–2 days at room temperature. Unripe plums should stay on the counter, since cold stops ripening and can leave them mealy with brown, dry flesh.
Is the white powder on plums safe?
Yes. The white or silvery dust is bloom, a natural wax produced by the fruit to reduce moisture loss. It is harmless and rinses off when you wash the plum before eating. Fuzzy, raised patches are mold and are a different matter.
Can plums be frozen?
Yes. Halved, pitted plums keep best quality for 8–12 months in the freezer. The skins can turn slightly tough and the flesh soft when thawed, so frozen plums are best cooked into crisps, sauces, jam or cakes.
