How Long Do Cherries Last?
Fresh cherries last 4–7 days in the fridge and should not be kept on the counter for more than a few hours. Pitted and frozen, they keep best quality for 8–12 months.
Cherries — fresh
shelf life- Cut: 2–3 days in the fridge
Fridge at 40°F (4°C) or below · freezer at 0°F (−18°C). Freezer times are for best quality; frozen food stays safe longer.
Cherries are picked ripe and do not improve after harvest. They lose quality faster in an hour at room temperature than in a day in the fridge, so cold storage matters more for them than for almost any other fruit. The green stem is a useful freshness gauge, and keeping it attached slows decay.
How to store cherries
- Refrigerate cherries as soon as you get home, unwashed and with stems on, in a loosely closed or perforated bag.
- Choose cherries with green, flexible stems; brown, brittle or missing stems mean older fruit that will not keep as long.
- Pit cherries before freezing, because pits are hard to remove from thawed fruit and can give a bitter almond taste over time.
- Keep them away from strong-smelling foods and rinse under cold water only right before eating.
How to tell if cherries have gone bad
- Soft, mushy or wrinkled fruit, particularly around the stem bowl.
- Brown, sunken spots or skin that has split and is leaking juice.
- White or gray mold near the stem or where cherries press together.
- A sour, fermented smell from the bag.
Bacteria that cause food poisoning usually do not change the look, smell or taste of food. Go by the time limits first, and the signs above second.

Frequently asked questions
Do cherries need to be refrigerated?
Yes. Cherries keep 4–7 days in the fridge but go soft and dull within a day at room temperature. A bowl on the table for an afternoon is fine, but return what is left to the fridge. Pitted or cut cherries should not be out for more than 2 hours.
How do you freeze cherries?
Wash, dry, stem and pit them, freeze in a single layer on a tray, then transfer to a freezer bag. They hold best quality for 8–12 months. Use them partly frozen in smoothies or baked into pies and clafoutis, since they thaw soft.
Are split or cracked cherries OK to eat?
Cherries with small, dry, healed cracks from rain in the orchard are safe if you eat them soon. Fresh, wet splits are an entry point for mold and yeast, so eat those the same day or discard them if the flesh looks brown or smells fermented.
Should you wash cherries before storing them?
No. Wash cherries just before eating. They absorb water through the stem end, which can cause splitting, and damp fruit in a bag molds faster. If they came home wet, pat them dry before refrigerating.
