How Long Does Whipped Cream Last?

Aerosol whipped cream lasts 3–4 weeks in the fridge. Homemade whipped cream keeps about 1 day refrigerated, or 1–2 months frozen in dollops. Neither should sit out for more than 2 hours.

Whipped cream is heavy cream beaten with air, either at home or dispensed from a pressurized can. The aerosol can keeps real cream sealed away from air and microbes, so it lasts for weeks. Homemade whipped cream has no such protection: it starts weeping and deflating within hours and should be treated as a same-day food.

How to store whipped cream

How to tell if whipped cream has gone bad

  • A sour or cheesy smell or taste in cream from the can, or cream that comes out thin, yellowish or lumpy.
  • Homemade whipped cream that has collapsed into a pool of liquid with a sour smell; weeping alone is a texture problem, souring is spoilage.
  • Any mold on the nozzle of the can or on the surface of a tub of whipped topping.
  • A can that sputters only gas or liquid long before its date, which means the propellant or the cream has failed.

Bacteria that cause food poisoning usually do not change the look, smell or taste of food. Go by the time limits first, and the signs above second.

Frequently asked questions

How long does homemade whipped cream last in the fridge?

Homemade whipped cream keeps about 1 day in the fridge, and looks its best for only a few hours. It slowly releases liquid and loses volume. Stabilizing it with a little powdered sugar, gelatin or mascarpone helps it hold its shape longer, but it does not make it safe for longer.

How long does Reddi-wip or canned whipped cream last once opened?

An aerosol can of real whipped cream lasts about 3–4 weeks in the fridge, and typically up to the date printed on the can if that comes first. The sealed, pressurized can protects the cream from air, so using it does not start a short countdown the way opening a carton does.

Can whipped cream be left out overnight?

No. Whipped cream, and desserts topped or filled with it, should not be out of the fridge for more than 2 hours. Cream is a rich growth medium for bacteria, and sugar does not protect it. A pie left out overnight with whipped cream on top should be thrown away.

Can you freeze whipped cream?

Yes, homemade whipped cream freezes well for 1–2 months when frozen as separate dollops or piped rosettes. Do not freeze an aerosol can, which can rupture. Frozen whipped topping in tubs is designed for the freezer and keeps 3–4 months there.
