How Long Does Bagged Salad Last?

Bagged salad lasts 3–5 days in the fridge once opened. Unopened, keep it refrigerated and use it by the date on the package. It cannot be frozen and should not sit out for more than 2 hours.

Bagged salad is pre-cut, pre-washed lettuce and greens sealed in a bag or clamshell, often with a modified atmosphere that slows browning. Because the leaves are already cut and have been handled in processing, they spoil faster than a whole head, and they have been linked to E. coli, Salmonella and Listeria outbreaks.

How to store bagged salad

How to tell if bagged salad has gone bad

  • A bag that has puffed up tight with gas, which means microbes inside are active.
  • Wet, slimy or dark leaves and brown liquid collecting in the corners of the bag.
  • A sour or rotten smell as soon as the bag is opened.
  • Heavy browning or pink edges on most of the cut lettuce pieces, a sign it is well past its best.

Bacteria that cause food poisoning usually do not change the look, smell or taste of food. Go by the time limits first, and the signs above second.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to wash bagged salad labeled triple-washed?

No. The FDA says greens labeled "washed", "triple-washed" or "ready-to-eat" do not need to be washed again. Rewashing at home is more likely to add bacteria from your sink, hands or colander than to remove any. Greens without that label should be rinsed under running water.

Can you eat bagged salad after the use-by date?

It is not recommended. Bagged salad is eaten raw, and Listeria can keep growing at refrigerator temperature without changing how the leaves look or smell. A day-old bag that looks perfect is probably fine for a healthy adult, but pregnant women, older adults and anyone with a weak immune system should stick to the date.

Why does my bagged salad go slimy so fast?

Moisture and cut edges are the cause. Every cut leaks cell juices that feed spoilage bacteria, and condensation inside the bag speeds this up once the sealed atmosphere is lost on opening. A paper towel in the bag and a fridge at 40°F (4°C) or colder buy you the full 3–5 days.

Can bagged salad be left out for a party?

Only for up to 2 hours, or 1 hour if it is above 90°F (32°C). Cut leafy greens are a food that the FDA says must be kept cold for safety. For a buffet, set the bowl in a larger bowl of ice and put out small amounts at a time.
