How Long Does Kiwi Last?

Ripe kiwi lasts 5–7 days in the fridge and 1–2 days on the counter. Firm, unripe kiwi ripens in 3–7 days at room temperature, or keeps 2–4 weeks in the fridge until you are ready to ripen it.

Fridge at 40°F (4°C) or below · freezer at 0°F (−18°C). Freezer times are for best quality; frozen food stays safe longer.

Kiwi is picked hard and starchy and keeps remarkably well in that state, which is how it travels around the world. It ripens at room temperature in response to ethylene, turning soft and sweet. After that, the thin fuzzy skin offers little protection and the fruit becomes overripe within about a week.

How to store kiwi

How to tell if kiwi has gone bad

  • Fruit that feels squishy or collapses under light pressure, with wrinkled, loose skin.
  • Flesh that has turned dark green to brownish and translucent, with a mushy texture.
  • A sour, fermented or alcohol-like smell or taste.
  • Mold on the skin, usually at the stem end or around a puncture.

Bacteria that cause food poisoning usually do not change the look, smell or taste of food. Go by the time limits first, and the signs above second.

Not safe = perishable: no more than 2 hours at room temperature (1 hour above 90°F / 32°C). Not recommended = possible, but quality suffers or it serves no purpose.

Frequently asked questions

How do you tell when a kiwi is ripe?

Hold the kiwi in your palm and press gently with your thumb; a ripe one yields slightly, like a ripe peach. A rock-hard kiwi is sour and starchy and needs 3–7 days on the counter. One that feels mushy or has wrinkled skin is overripe.

Should kiwi be kept in the fridge?

Refrigerate ripe kiwi, where it lasts 5–7 days. Unripe kiwi can go either way: on the counter to ripen within a week, or in the fridge, where it holds 2–4 weeks hard and ripens once you bring it out.

Can you eat kiwi skin?

Yes. Kiwi skin is edible and adds fiber, though the fuzz on green kiwi puts many people off; golden kiwi has smoother, thinner skin. Wash the fruit well and rub off some of the fuzz first. If you peel it, wash it first anyway so the knife stays clean.

Can kiwi be frozen?

Yes. Peel and slice ripe kiwi, freeze the slices on a tray, then bag them for 8–12 months at best quality. Frozen kiwi turns soft when thawed, so it suits smoothies, sorbet and sauces better than fruit platters.
