How Long Do Peas Last?
Fresh peas last 3–5 days in the fridge, whether in the pod or as snap and snow peas. Cooked peas keep 3–4 days, and blanched peas freeze for 8–12 months.
Peas — fresh
shelf life- Shucked: 1–2 days in the fridge
- Cooked: 3–4 days in the fridge
Fridge at 40°F (4°C) or below · freezer at 0°F (−18°C). Freezer times are for best quality; frozen food stays safe longer.
Fresh peas include shelling peas (English or garden peas), whose pods are discarded, and edible-pod types such as sugar snap and snow peas. Like sweet corn, peas convert their sugar to starch quickly after picking, so freshness is mostly about sweetness. This is also why frozen peas, processed within hours of harvest, are often sweeter than fresh.
How to store peas
- Refrigerate peas in their pods, unwashed, in a perforated or loosely closed bag, and shell them just before cooking.
- Eat them soon. English peas lose sweetness every day, so the first two days give the best flavor even though they remain usable for 3–5.
- Store sugar snap and snow peas with a paper towel in the bag; moisture on the pods causes white mold and soft spots.
- To freeze, shell, blanch for 1½–2 minutes, chill in ice water, dry, freeze on a tray and bag. Snap and snow peas blanch for about 2 minutes.
How to tell if peas have gone bad
- Pods that have turned yellow, limp or gray-speckled, with a dull, dry look.
- White fuzzy mold on the pods or where they touch in the bag.
- Slimy pods or shelled peas, or a sour, fermented smell.
- Shelled peas that are wrinkled, hard and starchy-tasting. They are over-mature or old, not unsafe, but the quality is poor.
Bacteria that cause food poisoning usually do not change the look, smell or taste of food. Go by the time limits first, and the signs above second.

Frequently asked questions
How long do sugar snap peas last in the fridge?
Sugar snap peas last 3–5 days in the fridge in a bag with a paper towel. They are at their crispest and sweetest in the first couple of days. Limp pods can be revived briefly in ice water; discard pods that are slimy, moldy or have large soft, translucent spots.
Can you eat fresh peas raw?
Yes, fresh garden peas, sugar snap peas and snow peas are all fine to eat raw after rinsing. Only the pods of snap and snow peas are tender enough to eat; English pea pods are stringy and tough. Dried split peas are different and must be cooked.
How long do frozen peas last once thawed?
Thawed frozen peas should be kept in the fridge and used within 3–4 days, and they should not sit at room temperature for more than 2 hours. Frozen vegetables are not ready-to-eat unless the package says so. Cook them according to the label before adding them to cold salads.
Do fresh peas need to be blanched before freezing?
Yes, for good results. Unblanched peas lose color, sweetness and texture in the freezer within a few weeks because their enzymes stay active. Blanching for 1½–2 minutes stops this, and the peas keep their quality for 8–12 months at 0°F (−18°C).
