How Long Does Cream Cheese Last?
Cream cheese lasts about 2 weeks in the fridge once opened. Unopened, it keeps until roughly the date on the package. Do not leave it out for more than 2 hours.
Cream Cheese — opened
shelf life- Unopened: 3–4 weeks in the fridge
Fridge at 40°F (4°C) or below · freezer at 0°F (−18°C). Freezer times are for best quality; frozen food stays safe longer.
Cream cheese is a fresh, unaged cheese made from milk and cream, sold in foil-wrapped bricks and in tubs as a spread. It is soft, moist and only mildly acidic, which gives mold and bacteria an easy place to grow once the seal is broken. Flavored and whipped versions tend to spoil a little sooner than plain bricks.
How to store cream cheese
- Fold the foil back over an opened brick and put it in a sealed container or zip-top bag so the exposed face does not dry, crack and turn yellow.
- Scoop from tubs with a clean knife every time; bagel crumbs, lox and jam left in the tub are what usually start mold.
- Soften only the amount a recipe calls for. A brick reaches spreading temperature in about 30 minutes, so there is no need to leave the whole package out.
- If you must freeze it, keep it for baking and cooked dips, and beat the thawed cheese smooth before using it.
How to tell if cream cheese has gone bad
- Spots of green, blue, pink or black mold anywhere on the surface; discard the whole package rather than scraping it off.
- A sour, sharp or yeasty smell in place of the usual mild, tangy one.
- A dry, cracked, yellowed surface, or a slimy film on top.
- Lots of separated watery liquid together with a lumpy or grainy texture. A teaspoon of clear whey alone is normal.
Bacteria that cause food poisoning usually do not change the look, smell or taste of food. Go by the time limits first, and the signs above second.

Frequently asked questions
How long does cream cheese last after opening?
Opened cream cheese lasts about 2 weeks in the fridge at 40°F (4°C) or colder. Tubs that get dipped into with used knives often mold sooner. Write the opening date on the lid, because the printed date only applies to a sealed package.
Can cream cheese be left out overnight to soften?
No. Cream cheese left out for more than 2 hours should be thrown away, according to standard USDA guidance for perishable foods. To soften a brick safely, leave it out for 30–60 minutes, cut it into cubes to speed things up, or microwave it unwrapped for 10–15 seconds.
Is a cheesecake or frosting made with cream cheese safe on the counter?
Only for up to 2 hours. Cheesecake, cream cheese frosting, dips and stuffed pastries are still perishable dairy foods, even with sugar added. Keep them refrigerated and bring them out shortly before serving.
Can you eat cream cheese after the expiration date?
An unopened package that has stayed cold is often fine for a week or so past its date, since that date is about quality. Once opened, go by the 2-week rule instead. Throw it out if you see any mold or smell sourness, and remember that harmful bacteria give no warning signs.
Can you freeze cream cheese?
You can, safely, but the quality drops. Freezing breaks the emulsion, so thawed cream cheese is crumbly, grainy and weepy and will not spread properly on a bagel. It works acceptably in baked cheesecake, casseroles and hot dips. Use frozen cream cheese within about 2 months.
