How Long Does Sour Cream Last?
Sour cream lasts 1–3 weeks in the fridge. Once opened, aim to use it within about 2 weeks. Freezing is not recommended because it separates and turns grainy.
Sour Cream — opened
shelf life- Unopened: 1–3 weeks in the fridge
- Prepared: 3–4 days in the fridge
Fridge at 40°F (4°C) or below · freezer at 0°F (−18°C). Freezer times are for best quality; frozen food stays safe longer.
Sour cream is cream that has been thickened and soured with lactic acid bacteria. The acidity protects it for a while, but its rich, moist surface is a favorite spot for mold and pink or orange yeasts. Because it is served with tacos, chili and baked potatoes, contamination from used spoons is the usual reason it turns early.
How to store sour cream
- Spoon out what you need with a clean utensil and put the tub straight back; a spoon that has touched chili or salsa seeds the whole container with spoilage organisms.
- Level the surface and press the inner film or a piece of plastic wrap onto it before replacing the lid to limit air contact.
- Keep the tub on a main shelf toward the back rather than in the door, and write the opening date on the lid so you are not guessing later.
- At parties, serve sour cream in a small bowl set over ice and refill it from the fridge instead of leaving the tub on the table.
How to tell if sour cream has gone bad
- Pink, orange, green or blue patches or fuzzy mold on the surface; discard the whole tub.
- A sharp, bitter, rancid or yeasty smell that goes beyond its usual clean tang.
- A yellowed or darkened color, particularly around the edges.
- Thick curds in a lot of separated liquid. A little clear whey on top on its own is normal and can be stirred in.
Bacteria that cause food poisoning usually do not change the look, smell or taste of food. Go by the time limits first, and the signs above second.

Frequently asked questions
How long does sour cream last after opening?
Opened sour cream lasts 1–3 weeks in the fridge, and a sensible working rule is about 2 weeks. How cleanly it has been handled matters more than the calendar. A tub that has only ever met clean spoons will outlast one used at a taco night.
Is watery liquid on top of sour cream a sign it has gone bad?
No, not by itself. The clear liquid is whey that has separated from the cream, and it happens to almost every tub after it has been scooped. Stir it back in or pour it off. Discard the sour cream only if there is also mold, discoloration, an off smell or a curdled texture.
Can you scrape mold off sour cream?
No. Sour cream is soft and moist, so mold sends threads down into it, and bacteria may be growing alongside. USDA's advice for moldy soft dairy such as sour cream and yogurt is to discard the entire container.
Can you freeze sour cream?
It is not recommended for anything you plan to eat as is. Freezing is safe, but the cream separates into grainy curds and liquid that never whisks back to smooth. If you freeze it anyway, use it only in cooked or baked dishes such as casseroles, soups and coffee cake.
Is sour cream good after the expiration date?
Often, for an unopened tub that has stayed at 40°F (4°C) or colder. The date marks quality, and sour cream's acidity gives some margin, commonly a week or so. Open it and check for mold, pink or yellow tints and sharp smells, and if it has been open more than about 2–3 weeks, replace it.
