How Long Do Raspberries Last?
Fresh raspberries last only 2–3 days in the fridge and should not be stored at room temperature. Frozen raspberries keep best quality for 8–12 months. Eat or freeze them soon after buying.
Raspberries — fresh
shelf life- Thawed: 1–2 days in the fridge
Fridge at 40°F (4°C) or below · freezer at 0°F (−18°C). Freezer times are for best quality; frozen food stays safe longer.
Raspberries are the most fragile berry in the produce aisle. Each one is a hollow cluster of tiny juice-filled drupelets with almost no protective skin, so they crush under their own weight and mold within days. They do not ripen after picking, and any moisture in the container shortens their life further.
How to store raspberries
- Turn the clamshell over in the store and check the absorbent pad; juice stains mean crushed berries at the bottom that will mold first.
- Spread raspberries in a single layer in a shallow container lined with paper towel so the ones on the bottom are not crushed.
- Rinse them gently in a bowl of water only right before eating, never under a hard stream, which breaks the drupelets apart.
- If you cannot eat them within two days, freeze them on a tray the day you buy them and bag them once solid.
How to tell if raspberries have gone bad
- White or gray fuzz inside the hollow center of the berry, which is where raspberry mold often starts and is easy to miss.
- Berries that have collapsed into a wet, dark red mush or are leaking juice.
- A sharp fermented or wine-like smell.
- Berries fused together in a clump with visible mold threads between them.
Bacteria that cause food poisoning usually do not change the look, smell or taste of food. Go by the time limits first, and the signs above second.

Frequently asked questions
Why do raspberries go moldy so fast?
Raspberries mold quickly because they have almost no skin, a hollow core that traps moisture, and they bruise during shipping. Gray mold spores are already on most berries when you buy them and only need dampness to grow. Keeping the berries cold, dry and in a single layer is the best defense.
Can you eat the rest of the raspberries if a few are moldy?
You can, with care. Throw away the moldy berries and every berry that was touching them, because mold spreads easily through soft fruit. Inspect the rest, including inside the hollow centers, rinse them just before eating and use them the same day. If mold is widespread, discard the whole container.
Do raspberries freeze well?
Yes. Freeze dry, unwashed or well-dried raspberries in a single layer, then transfer them to a freezer bag for 8–12 months at best quality. They lose their shape when thawed, so use them in smoothies, sauces, jam and baking.
Can raspberries be left out on the counter?
It is not a good idea. Raspberries left at room temperature soften and start to mold within a day, and even a few hours in a warm car noticeably shortens their life. Get them into the fridge as soon as you are home.
