Cranberries — fresh
shelf life- Cooked: 10–14 days in the fridge
Fridge at 40°F (4°C) or below · freezer at 0°F (−18°C). Freezer times are for best quality; frozen food stays safe longer.
Fresh cranberries are firm, very acidic and low in sugar, which makes them far tougher than other berries. Their thick skin and natural acids hold off mold and bacteria for weeks in the cold. They are sold mostly in autumn, so freezing a few bags is the usual way to have them year-round.
How to store cranberries
- Keep fresh cranberries in their original perforated bag in the crisper drawer, and do not wash them until you are about to cook.
- Freeze the unopened bag exactly as it is; there is no need to wash, dry or tray-freeze cranberries first because they do not clump.
- Cook with frozen cranberries straight from the freezer without thawing, since thawed berries turn soft and are harder to chop.
- Move leftover canned cranberry sauce out of the can into a covered glass or plastic container before refrigerating it.
How to tell if cranberries have gone bad
- Berries that are soft, wrinkled, or squash flat between your fingers; a good cranberry is hard and will bounce if dropped.
- Brown, dull or translucent berries, or sticky liquid collecting in the bag.
- Visible mold or a musty, fermented smell.
- Cranberry sauce with mold on the surface, bubbles, or a sour alcoholic odor.
Bacteria that cause food poisoning usually do not change the look, smell or taste of food. Go by the time limits first, and the signs above second.

Frequently asked questions
How long does cranberry sauce last after Thanksgiving?
Homemade or opened canned cranberry sauce lasts 10–14 days in the fridge in a covered container. Its high acid and sugar content lets it outlast the other holiday leftovers, which are good for only 3–4 days. Refrigerate it within 2 hours of serving.
How can you tell if fresh cranberries are bad?
Bad cranberries are soft, shriveled, brown or leaking. Fresh ones are firm, glossy and deep red, and they bounce. It is normal to find a few soft berries in a bag; sort them out and use the rest. Discard the whole bag if there is mold or a fermented smell.
Can you freeze fresh cranberries?
Yes, and they are one of the easiest fruits to freeze. Put the unopened bag straight into the freezer, where it will hold best quality for 8–12 months. Use the berries frozen in sauces, muffins and breads.
Are pale or white cranberries safe to eat?
Yes. White or pale pink cranberries are simply less pigmented, often because they grew shaded from the sun, and they are fully edible. What matters is firmness: a pale, hard berry is fine, while a dark but mushy one should be thrown away.
