How Long Do Blackberries Last?
Fresh blackberries last 3–5 days in the fridge and about a day at most on the counter. Frozen on a tray and bagged, they keep best quality for 8–12 months.
Blackberries — fresh
shelf life- Thawed: 1–2 days in the fridge
Fridge at 40°F (4°C) or below · freezer at 0°F (−18°C). Freezer times are for best quality; frozen food stays safe longer.
Blackberries are clusters of thin-skinned drupelets around a soft white core that stays in the fruit when picked. They are a little sturdier than raspberries but still bruise, leak and mold within days. They stop ripening at harvest, so a red or sour berry will never sweeten in your kitchen.
How to store blackberries
- Store blackberries unwashed in a shallow, paper-towel-lined container, no more than two berries deep, so the bottom layer is not crushed.
- Rinse them right before eating; foraged wild blackberries can be soaked for a few minutes in cool water to float out small insects, then drained and eaten the same day.
- Remove any berry with red juice bleeding around it, because a leaking berry is the starting point for mold in the whole container.
- Freeze surplus berries dry on a tray and bag them once hard, so you can pour out a handful at a time for oatmeal or cobbler.
How to tell if blackberries have gone bad
- White or gray fuzzy mold between the drupelets or on the underside where berries rest on the container.
- Berries that have turned dull, soft and mushy, or are sitting in dark purple juice.
- A sour, fermented smell instead of a faint sweet one.
- Drupelets that have dried into hard brown patches, which indicates old, deteriorating fruit.
Bacteria that cause food poisoning usually do not change the look, smell or taste of food. Go by the time limits first, and the signs above second.

Frequently asked questions
How long do blackberries last in the fridge?
Blackberries last 3–5 days in the fridge. Plan on the shorter end for supermarket berries that have already been shipped, and for anything picked in hot or wet weather. Keeping them dry, unwashed and in a shallow layer helps them reach the longer end.
Why are some of my blackberries red or sour?
Red or partly red blackberries were picked before they were ripe, and blackberries do not ripen after harvest. They are safe to eat but will stay tart and firm. Cook them with sugar in jam, sauce or a crumble rather than waiting for them to sweeten.
Are white spots on blackberries mold?
Not always. Flat, tan or white drupelets that are dry and firm are usually sun or heat damage from the field and are harmless. Mold is fuzzy, raised and tends to bridge from one berry to the next. Discard fuzzy berries and any that were touching them.
Can you freeze blackberries?
Yes. Spread dry berries on a tray, freeze until hard, then bag them for 8–12 months at best quality. They thaw soft and release a lot of juice, which makes them better for pies, cobblers, sauces and smoothies than for eating fresh.
