How Long Do Mixed Nuts Last?
Opened mixed nuts keep 2–3 months in a cool pantry, about 6 months in the fridge and up to 1 year in the freezer. An unopened can or jar is good for about 6 months.

Mixed nuts are usually a roasted, salted blend of peanuts, cashews, almonds, Brazil nuts, pecans and hazelnuts. A mix only keeps as long as its most fragile member: pecans, walnuts and Brazil nuts turn rancid well before almonds or cashews do, and one rancid nut flavors every handful. Roasting and added oil shorten the life further compared with raw nuts.
How to store mixed nuts
- Snap the plastic lid back on the can after each serving, or move the nuts to a jar. An open can on the coffee table goes stale within a week or two.
- After a party, do not pour nuts from the serving bowl back into the can. Many hands and hours in the open air shorten the life of the whole batch.
- If you buy large warehouse-size containers, split them: a small jar in the pantry and the rest in freezer bags in the freezer.
- Keep mixes that contain pecans, walnuts or Brazil nuts in the fridge if you will not finish them within a month or two.
How to tell if mixed nuts have gone bad
- A smell of paint, putty or stale fryer oil when you open the can.
- One kind of nut, often the pecans, walnuts or Brazil nuts, tasting sharply bitter. Once one has turned, the rest are not far behind.
- Nuts that are soft and chewy rather than crunchy, or salt coating that has turned damp and sticky.
- Webbing, tiny moths or larvae, or any mold or musty smell — discard the entire container.
Bacteria that cause food poisoning usually do not change the look, smell or taste of food. Go by the time limits first, and the signs above second.

Frequently asked questions
How long do mixed nuts last after opening?
Opened mixed nuts last about 2–3 months in a cool pantry if the container is sealed after each use, and about 6 months in the fridge. They lose crunch first, then the higher-oil nuts in the blend turn rancid. Heat and humidity shorten both times considerably.
Can you eat mixed nuts past the expiration date?
Usually, if the can was sealed and stored cool. The printed date is a quality estimate, not a safety deadline. Open it and check: fresh nuts smell sweet and toasty. If several taste bitter or the can smells like paint, the oils have gone rancid and the nuts should be discarded.
Which nuts in a mix go bad first?
Walnuts, pecans, Brazil nuts and pine nuts go rancid first because their oils are richest in polyunsaturated fat. Almonds, cashews and hazelnuts are more stable, and peanuts fall in between. When you taste-test an old mix, try one of the fragile nuts; if it is still sweet, the rest will be too.
Is it OK to freeze a can of mixed nuts?
Yes. Transfer the nuts to a freezer bag or airtight container and freeze for up to 1 year at best quality. Salted roasted nuts freeze as well as raw ones. Let the closed bag reach room temperature before opening so condensation does not dissolve the salt and soften the nuts.
